Medication can help with the control of sexual urges by reducing these, and the sex drive in general.
There are currently two groups of medication available for these purposes. Both contribute to a decrease in the frequency of sexual fantasies and a diminished experience of sexual arousal. These effects may also be accompanied by impaired sexual function.
SSRI – selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors:
This group of medications was originally developed for the treatment of depression. The effect of the naturally occurring neurotransmitter serotonin is amplified. This effects an improvement in mood and a decrease in sexual urgency.
Male sex hormones, androgens, have long been known for their role in male sexuality. They influence the frequency of sexual fantasies, the experience of arousal and actual sexual function. Anti-androgens work against these effects.
Two groups of medications are used:
• So-called receptor blockers prevent the full effects of naturally occurring male sex hormones. These medications have been used for many years and their impacts are well studied.
• Somewhat newer is the group of so-called GnRH-Analogs. The name is derived from the neurotransmitter responsible for regulating the production and release of the male sex hormones. Administering these medications leads to a decrease in the synthesis of male sex hormones. For this reason they are also used in the follow-up treatment of prostate cancer, as the production of new cancer cells is promoted by androgens.
Procedure in the Prevention Network “Kein Täter werden”
The indication for drug therapy is provided by therapists in cooperation with the treated participants during the course of therapy. All participants are comprehensively informed during therapy of the effects and side effects of medications. Possible physical limitations of the use of particular treatments are assessed in a discussion with a physician. The administration and ingestion of the medication is also done under medical supervision. The professionals at the sites coordinate regular and necessary controls.
